HUEHUETENANGO, Guatemala – U.S. Army Reserve medical Soldiers attached to the
352nd Combat Support Hospital are providing medical support for Task Force Rise
during exercise Beyond the Horizon 2019.
While a few of the units are out in the local community building schools,
clinics and running medical readiness exercises, the 352nd CSH, based out of
Dublin, California, is operating the troop medical center providing medical
care and council to Soldiers with minor injuries or sicknesses here.
“I think the goals for this mission are great; it’s mostly medical support and
building facilities for locals,” said Spc. Austin Chan, a practical nursing
specialist with the 352nd CSH. “I don’t get to go out to the communities to
help so I do what I can to boost morale in Soldiers who find themselves in the
TMC.”
Chan said that when Soldiers are ill their morale drop but getting them back
healthy and keeping their spirits high ensures that the task force is mission
ready and capable.
Beyond the Horizon is an annual exercise that combines medical, dental,
veterinary and engineering missions to improve the operational readiness of
U.S. Forces, reinforce region stability and interoperability with allied
forces.
“The U.S.’s mission in Guatemala is to train U.S. personnel, build upon lasting
relationships with Central American nations and support stability to the
region,” said Col. Timothy U. Phillips, chief of sustainment, U.S. Army South.
“U.S. forces are working hand-in-hand with a variety of governmental and
nongovernmental organizations conducting valuable training for U.S. forces, which
also provides medical and engineering support to local populations
